History of Grenville Christian College

Here we provide the history of Grenville Christian College (Brockville, Ont.), the Canadian private boarding school that was associated with the Community of Jesus (Orleans, MA). This information is based on both public records and personal experiences of those who were there.

1961 |  J. Alistair Haig and Mary M. Haig (Al and Mary) first meet Cay Andersen and Judy Sorensen when Cay & Judy stayed with Mary’s parents’ home. This happened while Al and Mary were at Albert College.

1966 | After Christmas: Cay & Judy visit Al & Mary and their boys.

1967 | Al Haig is hired by Stony Brook School for Girls, a privately owned school located on Long Island as their Head Master, and his wife Mary as its Dean of Women.

1968 | When the financial problems of the school became apparent, Al and Mary went to Texas to meet with the Berean Fellowship of Dallas and see their Berean Christian School (BCS). This is where Al & Mary met Charles & Betty Farnsworth, who were members of BCS. Al & Mary became members at that time, also.

1968 | The private owner of Stony Brook ultimately sell the school to the Berean Fellowship and send Charles Farnsworth to New York to direct the school.

1969 | When asked to return to Canada to open a boarding school there, Al and Mary do so and eventually locate the building of what had been St. Mary’s College in Brockville, Ontario. They put a down-payment on it and invite the Farnsworths to come up and join them. Charles and Betty bring a lot of the former Berean staff from Dallas to Brockville and open its doors to students in September.

1972 | Al and Mary meet David Manuel, book editor at Logos and member of the Community of Jesus. Al and Mary Haig visit the Community of Jesus for the first time.

1973 | April 28: Mother Cay and Mother Judy visit Berean Christian School for 2 days but end up staying for 2 weeks.

1973 | July 9: Members of the Berean Christian School in Brockville, Ontario come to spend a week at the COJ during the summer. During one meeting in the “outdoor chapel,” staff members and their kids agreed to wear neither jeans nor short skirts, and all immediately got shorter haircuts—while still in the outdoor chapel.

1974 | Late August: Al & Mary Haig visit the Community of Jesus with the other 50 staff members. At Cay & Judy’s strong suggestion, Al decides to stay for 3 months.

1974 | September–November: Al is a “live-in” at the Community of Jesus. Mentions Father Art Lane, Buzz Elmer, Paul Mitman, and Hal & Helen Helms.

1974 | November/December: The name Berean Christian School is changed to Grenville Christian College (GCC).

1976 | The seven or eight COJ kids in public high school were sent to GCC for the school year on scholarships. However, they were not treated special; they were treated like staff kids (as if they were still living in the Community).

1970s+ | Starting sometime around the late 1970s/early 1980s, GCC staff started taking vows “to God”:

  • “before the Families, Sisters and Brothers of the Community of Jesus, your priest and pastor, Father Lane, and your spiritual Mothers, Mothers Cay and Mother Judy[.]”

  • “I express my obedience to You, Jesus, through my yieldedness and submission to the Community of Jesus and to my spiritual Mothers, Mother Cay and Mother Judy.”

1980 | June 3: GCC purchases Lots 13 and 14 (15 Uncle Ben’s Way, Orleans) at the Community of Jesus from Diet, Discipline & Discipleship, Inc. (3D), of which Carol Showalter and Mary Haig are officers.

1988 | December 2: Quitclaim Deed from Grenville Christian College to Community of Jesus: Lots 30 & 31, Orleans.

1992 | April 3: Grenville Christian College Foundation, Inc. (GCC Foundation) is created as a Massachusetts nonprofit. Officers are Richard Laraja and John Ingwersen of The Community of Jesus, and Daniel E. Ortolani of Grenville Christian College.

2001 | September 26: GCC sells Lot 3 to Daniel & Ellen Ortolani and Matthew & Sarah Andre.

2001 | September 28: GCC acts as lender for $40,000 mortgage for Lot 3 to borrowers Ortolani and Andre. Balance due September 28, 2004.

2007 | Late July: Grenville Christian College abruptly closes its doors (amid allegations of “improprieties and cult practices”).

2007 | October 10: GCC Foundation files Articles of Amendment and changes the name of the foundation to the Christian Education Fund, Inc. (CEF).

2008 | January 15: GCC discharges the mortgage to Ortolani and Andre.

2008 | November: David Manuel testifies in a motion to the court that he met Al & Mary Haig in 1972 and invited them to the Community. He further testifies that many at Grenville Christian College took vows to Cay & Judy and the Community.

2019 | September & October: The trial for the class action lawsuit against Grenville Christian College took place. The judge later ruled in 2020 in favor of the plaintiffs.

2021 | “The Fifth Estate,” a Canadian television evening magazine, produces two shows (several months apart) about allegations about Grenville Christian College staff, the lifestyle imposed on the students, and ties to the Community of Jesus:
